What is 4 Wheel Steer?
Four Wheel Steer, also known as quadrasteer or QS4, is a General Motors chassis technology that steers all four wheels of a vehicle at once. This results in greater agility at low speeds. Along with that, the Silverado EV is outfitted with enormous 24-inch wheels for greater power and strength.
How 4 Wheel Steer Works
Four Wheel Steer electronically controls the rear wheels accounting for different speeds and various load conditions to enhance the vehicle’s agility and maneuverability. This is especially helpful when you’re using your vehicle to tow or park. Controlled by two sophisticated microprocessors, the Four Wheel Steer steer-by-wire rear axle enables the system to behave according to different vehicle speed and driving modes.
More specifically, the system turns the wheels in the opposite direction of the forward wheels to a maximum of 15 degrees (12 degrees in two mode) at speeds up to 40-45 mpg. This may not seem like a lot, but it is very effective. At speeds around 40-45, the rear wheels track neutrally. However, the system turns the rear wheels in the direction of the forward wheels to increase stability and control at speeds over 45 mph. There’s also a failsafe: if there is a discrepancy between the two microprocessors, the system shuts down and reverts back to traditional two-wheel steering to ensure you’re always in control.
Benefits of 4 Wheel Steer
There are many great benefits of Four Wheel Steer, most especially when you’re parking and towing. Vehicles equipped with Four Wheel Steer have a much smaller turning radius than vehicles without, making your driving experience easier, safer, and more controlled. Especially for pickup trucks and larger SUVs, this steer system enables you to park in small spaces or tow with ease and confidence. When it comes to towing, having a small turning radius enabled by Four Wheel Steer is particularly useful when towing boats, fifth wheels, and other large equipment because it enables easier maneuverability and handling.
