Will Chevy Be Unveiling A Crate Engine Soon?
With some teasing on Instagram last month, it appears Chevrolet and General Motors may have a new Chevy crate engine on the way. The manufacturer’s Instagram page gave customers a sneak peek clip for an unknown new Chevy performance product. The clip featured revving engine noises and a vehicle taking off a track followed by the hint that “Something Big Is Coming.” Learn more about Chevy Crate Engines at Smith Chevrolet of Northwest Indiana!
What Is a Crate Engine?
The simplest description of a crate engine is that it is a full and complete engine delivered directly to a customer on a crate. Delivering an engine in this way makes upgrading your engine as simple as possible. With a crate engine, you won’t have to worry about the difficulty of building or rebuilding an engine.
In general, crate engines are especially useful in two situations. First, crate engines are the quickest and easiest way to replace your original engine if it fails over the years. Second, some drivers love their model but want to boost their vehicle’s performance by replacing the engine. With a crate engine, they have the opportunity to build their ideal vehicle with the specific engine that will meet their needs.
Sneak Peek on Performance Chevy Instagram
On Chevrolet’s Performance Instagram page, the automaker shared a video clip of a mysterious V8-powered vehicle accelerating down an empty drag strip. The clip ends as the words “Something big is coming,” appear on the screen. Market watchers believe the teaser clip is hinting at a new crate engine considering it’s the Chevy Performance page, and Chevrolet crate engines will be marketed toward drag racers and other motorsports enthusiasts. Stay tuned for all of the official details once they become available!
What We Suspect About the Engine
While the automaker is keeping the new product secret for now, there are a few things we can guess about it. Last year, Chevrolet Performance introduced a new iron cylinder block based on the 6.6L L8T V8 engine offered in heavy duty Chevy trucks and utility vans. Given that unveiling, it is possible the teaser clip is hinting at a crate engine version of the L8T V8. This engine is capable of producing factory-rated 401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm.
If that’s what Chevrolet is set to introduce, the L8T V8 would come fully dressed and ready for installation in a drag racing car or classic. For a vehicle with the same engine, find Chevy trucks for sale at Smith Motors!
